Extra Long Shower Curtains Tips

Once we get moved into our new home, decorating often begins with window coverings. In most instances a shower curtain is not in place, or the existing one needs to be replaced. Shower curtains and rods come in a variety of styles, designs, sizes and are constructed from a variety of materials from vinyl to fabrics. The standard size of a shower curtain is 70" x 72" The standard shower curtain usually fits a standard rod. New bathroom designs may require not only wider but extra long shower curtains.

Older homes often have high ceilings, as do newer homes and apartments that have cathedral style ceilings. Whether it be a drapery or shower curtain, the shorter styles do not fit the look that we may be trying to achieve. Shorter shower curtains with rods in the typical position do not cover shower heads and may allow splashing onto the floor which could cause damage to the flooring. Attaching shower rods near the ceiling, will require the longer shower curtain which may be up to 96". Although extra long shower curtains can be found easily online, you may need to have your shower curtain custom made if you need one that is extra wide and extra long.

There are ways to add an elegance to the bathroom with extra long bathroom curtains. One idea is to have a liner that is a solid color, with a design at the top or bottom, such as white, and the shower curtain a print or flower design in black and white, as an example. Allow the shower curtain liner to hang straight, while grabbing the shower curtain and using a tie back and fasten it to the wall, as many do with living room draperies. The shower curtain can be untied when it is in use. If there is a bathroom window, purchasing a valance with the same pattern of the shower curtain will add the finishing touch.

When searching for extra long shower curtains there are several things to look for while comparing prices. It is not difficult to find attractive shower curtains regardless of the size. However, one of the main issues is mold and mildew. There are shower curtains which are made from vinyl as well as fabric which are treated to make them mold and mildew resistant that are reasonably priced. Many of the fabric styles made from polyester can be machine washed and dried. If your are considering a vinyl curtain, look for those that are at least a 10 gauge which make them heavy duty.
